Feeding Instructions
When to Use
Recommended for:
-
Orphaned guinea pig pups
-
Large litters where maternal milk is insufficient
-
Supplementing poorly nourished or compromised young
Pups that did not receive maternal colostrum may benefit from the addition of an Impact Colostrum Supplement.
Making Up Milk
-
To make 35mL: Mix 1 level scoop (6.5g) of powder with 30mL of warm pre-boiled water.
-
To make 1 litre: Mix 190g of powder with 870mL of warm pre-boiled water.
Mixing Tips:
Start by combining half the water with the powder to form a smooth paste, then gradually add the remaining water. Avoid overly hot water to prevent curdling. An electric whisk may be used for larger quantities. Prepared milk can be stored in the fridge for 24 hours or frozen for up to 2 weeks in single-feed portions (e.g. ice cube trays). Discard any unused thawed milk. Always wash feeding equipment thoroughly after each use.
Feeding Guide
- Warm milk to approximately 35°C before feeding.
- Use a syringe or bottle fitted with a P Teat.
- Feed every 2–3 hours during the first 5 days, then reduce to every 4–6 hours as pups mature.
- Reduce milk feeds gradually as solid food intake increases.
- Stimulate defecation and urination for pups during the first week.
- Provide fresh drinking water, especially during hot weather.
- Some pups may begin to lap milk independently shortly after birth.
Growth Monitoring
- Birth weight typically ranges from 60–110g.
- Weight gain should be 3–7g per day depending on breed.
- Monitor body weight daily to confirm appropriate feeding volumes.
- Overfeeding can cause digestive upset or diarrhoea.
Weaning Guidelines
-
Pups may begin nibbling solids at 2–3 days old.
-
Offer hay, green leafy vegetables, and quality pellets.
-
Avoid sugary or starchy foods (e.g. grains, fruit, root vegetables) until fully weaned.
-
Ideally provide access to caecotrophs from a healthy adult to support gut flora development.
Although some carers may begin weaning as early as 5–7 days, doing so may restrict essential protein intake during peak growth. For optimal development, continue feeding milk until 14–21 days, similar to mother-raised pups.
