Wombaroo Wombat Milk Replacer <0.4 – For Early-Stage Wombat Joeys (“Pinkies”)
A specially formulated milk substitute designed for very immature wombat joeys in the earliest stage of development — less than 40% through their pouch life. These joeys are typically furless, with pink skin, eyes closed, ears folded down, and entirely pouch-bound. Faeces at this stage are soft and resemble yellow custard in consistency.
Key Features
-
Matches Early Lactation Milk – Accurately reflects the composition of wombat milk during early pouch life to meet the unique needs of underdeveloped joeys.
-
Low Fat & Energy Content – Provides the appropriate nutrient balance for this stage of development, avoiding overloading the digestive system.
-
Highly Digestible – Contains gentle proteins and carbohydrates that are easy for young joeys to absorb.
-
Supports Immune Health – May be used in conjunction with Impact Colostrum Supplement to help boost immunity in neonatal wombats.
-
For Experienced Carers Only – This formula is intended for use by carers with specialist knowledge and equipment, as joeys at this stage are fragile and require intensive care.
Directions for Mixing
To prepare 100mL of milk:
-
Mix 14g of powder (2 scoops) with 95mL of warm, preboiled water.
To prepare 1 litre of milk:
-
Mix 140g of powder with 950mL of warm, preboiled water.
-
Add half the water to the powder and stir into a smooth paste.
-
Add the remaining water and mix thoroughly.
-
Ensure water is not too hot (prevents curdling) or too cold (difficult to dissolve powder).
-
An electric whisk is ideal for larger batches.
Storage: Prepared milk can be stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours or frozen for up to 2 weeks. Freeze in small portions (e.g., ice cube trays) for convenience. Discard any unused thawed milk and wash all feeding equipment thoroughly.
Feeding Guidelines
-
Feed Temperature: Warm milk to approximately 30°C before feeding.
-
Feeding Method: Use a syringe or STM Teat with a feeding bottle suited to small, pouch-bound wombats.
-
Frequency: Feed at least 8 times per day for joeys under 40% of pouch life.
-
Hydration: In hot conditions or when dehydration is a risk, offer preboiled water between milk feeds.
-
Care Advice: Always seek guidance from a veterinarian or experienced wildlife carer to ensure appropriate husbandry.
Growth Monitoring
Growth rates vary between species and individual joeys. Refer to Wombaroo growth charts for Common (Bare-nosed) and Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats. Regularly weigh joeys to monitor progress and adjust feed volumes accordingly. Avoid overfeeding, as this may cause digestive issues such as diarrhoea.
Transitioning to Wombat Milk Replacer 0.4
Begin transitioning to Wombaroo Wombat Milk Replacer 0.4 when the joey’s ears begin to lift upright, signalling a new stage of development. Transition gradually over 10 days by mixing increasing amounts of the 0.4 formula with decreasing amounts of the <0.4 formula. Refer to the Wombaroo transition guidelines and species-specific growth charts for best results.
