Echidna Milk Replacer – Late Lactation
Specialised milk formula for echidna puggles over 50 days of age and suitable for young platypus.

Support the healthy development of older echidna puggles with a scientifically balanced milk substitute that mimics the composition of late-stage echidna lactation. Ideal for hand-rearing puggles that are finely furred with emerging to fully developed spines, this formula provides the high energy and protein required during peak growth, while maintaining low carbohydrate levels to support optimal gut health.

Key Features

  • Late Lactation Formula – Specifically designed to match the composition of echidna milk in the later stages of lactation.

  • High in Energy – Elevated fat content meets the nutritional needs of puggles fed at infrequent intervals.

  • Protein-Rich for Growth – Supports rapid development and the emergence of fur and spines.

  • Low Carbohydrate – Reduces the risk of digestive upset and fermentation in the gut.

When to Use

Use Wombaroo Echidna Milk Replacer – Late Lactation for puggles older than 50 days, when they would naturally be deposited in a burrow. At this stage, they are covered in fine fur with emerging spines. For immune support, consider supplementing with Impact Colostrum.

Making up the Milk

To make 100mL: Mix 36g (approx. 5 scoops) of powder with 70mL of warm, pre-boiled water.
To make 700mL: Mix 250g of powder with 500mL of warm water.

Mixing Instructions:
Add half the water first to form a paste, then add the rest and mix thoroughly. Avoid overheating or underheating water to prevent curdling or poor mixing. Use an electric whisk for larger quantities. Prepared milk can be stored in the fridge for 24 hours or frozen in small portions for up to two weeks.

Feeding Guide

Warm milk to approximately 30°C and feed from the palm or a shallow rubber bowl. Use gloves and practise hygiene to reduce contamination risk. In the wild, echidnas at this stage are only fed by their mother every 5 days, so feeds should be spaced at least 2 days apart, increasing gradually with age.

Avoid overfeeding. Echidnas digest milk slowly and must empty their stomachs before the next feed.

Provide fresh drinking water between feeds, especially in hot weather. Ensure housing remains below 30°C to prevent dehydration.

Growth Monitoring

Refer to the Echidna Growth Chart for typical weight ranges. Weigh puggles before each feed to track growth and determine appropriate milk volumes. Avoid overfeeding to reduce the risk of diarrhoea.

Weaning

At around 3 to 4 months of age, begin mixing small amounts of Wombaroo Echidna Food into the milk. Gradually increase solids and decrease milk, transitioning the consistency from thin porridge to a thick paste. Add up to 10% crushed termite mound or similar substrate to support gut health.

By 5 to 7 months of age, puggles should be fully weaned onto a slurry of Echidna Food, supplemented with termites and ants. Final body weight may range from 700g to over 2kg, depending on the individual.
