Butec OTM is an Australian developed and made non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) formulated for the alleviation of pain associated with routine husbandry procedures in cattle and sheep. Containing 10 mg/mL meloxicam as the active ingredient, Butec OTM is administered as a blue viscous gel applied between the molar teeth and inside of the cheek - providing needle-free, long-lasting pain relief that starts working within 15 minutes. Developed in association with CSIRO, Meat and Livestock Australia and Australian Wool Innovation, Butec OTM is a cost-effective and practical pain management solution for Australian producers.

Simply apply the gel with the dedicated applicator gun before the procedure and the meloxicam is absorbed through the mucosa of the inner cheek - no needles, no injections and no additional handling stress. Once opened, the product can be used for up to 6 months. Available in 450mL and 1L bottles, with a promotional pack of 2 x 450mL including an applicator gun also available. Applicator guns for calves and lambs are sold separately.

Indications for Use

Species	Indicated Procedures
Cattle	Disbudding or dehorning and castration in calves. Recommended for use in combination with a cornual nerve block and local anaesthetic at the surgical site to enhance pain relief and minimise tissue damage and distress.
Sheep	Castration, tail docking and mulesing of lambs.

How to Administer Butec OTM

Administer the dose immediately before the procedure into the space between the molar teeth and the inside of the cheek while holding the mouth closed. The product is designed to be absorbed through the mucosa of the inner cheek - not to be swallowed, although this will not cause harm if it occurs. Apply using the dedicated Butec applicator gun and nozzle.

Withholding Periods

Retreatment Intervals

• Cattle: Do not re-treat animals for 21 days after treatment.
• Sheep: Indicated for a single administration at the recommended dose rate only.

 

Contraindications

• Contraindicated in animals suffering from haemorrhagic gastrointestinal disorders, impaired hepatic, cardiac or renal function, haemorrhagic disorders, or where there is evidence of individual hypersensitivity to the product.
• Contraindicated for concurrent administration with glucocorticosteroids, other NSAIDs or anti-coagulant agents.
• Do not use in lactating or pregnant cows where milk may be used or processed for human consumption.
