Wombaroo Koala Milk Replacer – Late Lactation Formula (180 Days to Weaning)

Wombaroo Koala Milk Replacer Late Lactation is a premium milk substitute formulated for koala joeys aged 180 days and older, through to full weaning. At this stage, joeys are fully furred, emerging or fully emerged from the pouch, increasingly mobile, and starting to explore and nibble on eucalyptus leaves. From around 270 days, leaf becomes a significant part of their diet.

Key Benefits:

  • Species-Specific Formulation: Matches the nutrient profile of natural late lactation koala milk.

  • High Energy Content: Supports increased activity and development as joeys grow more independent.

  • Protein-Rich: Meets demands of peak growth phase.

  • Reduced Carbohydrates: Encourages dietary transition from milk to eucalyptus leaves.

  • Versatile Use: Also suitable as nutritional support for adult koalas recovering from illness or injury (e.g. bushfire or burns victims).

Ingredients:

Whole milk solids (low lactose), whey protein, casein, vegetable oils, omega-3 & 6 fatty acids, vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B9, B12, C, D3, E, K, biotin, choline, inositol, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, zinc, iron, manganese, copper, iodine, selenium.

Guaranteed Analysis:

  • Protein: 32%

  • Fat: 43%

  • Ash: 5%

  • Moisture: 3%

  • Metabolisable Energy (ME): 25 MJ/kg

Available Pack Sizes: 240g, 1.2kg, 5kg, 10kg

When to Use:

Use this formula for older joeys showing the following characteristics:

  • Fully furred with short or dense long fur

  • Teeth fully erupted and beginning to chew leaves

  • Emerging or emerged from the pouch

  • Actively exploring surroundings

For enhanced immunity, Impact Colostrum Supplement may be added to feeds. From 180–210 days, young koalas should also be offered ‘pap’ (pre-digested leaf material) from an adult to help their transition to a eucalyptus-based diet.

Preparation Instructions:

To make 100mL of milk:
Mix 32g of powder (4 scoops) with 75mL of pre-boiled warm water.

To make 750mL of milk:
Mix 240g of powder with 550mL of warm water.

  1. Add half the water to the powder and stir to form a smooth paste.

  2. Add remaining water and mix thoroughly.

  3. Ensure water is not too hot (may cause curdling) or too cold (may not dissolve powder effectively).

  4. Use an electric whisk for best results with larger volumes.

Refrigerate milk for up to 24 hours or freeze in small portions (e.g. ice cube trays) for up to 2 weeks. Discard unused thawed milk. Always sterilise feeding equipment after use.

Feeding Guide:

  • Warm milk to ~30°C before feeding.

  • Use a bottle with an LD Teat for smaller joeys or FM Teat for larger ones.

  • Feed frequency:

    • Start with 4 times daily, reduce to 2 times once fully emerged from the pouch.

    • Drop to once daily as more leaf is consumed.

Water should be available at all times, either in a dish or misted onto leaves. Provide fresh eucalypt leaves from suitable local species to support dietary transition. Always monitor for dehydration, especially in hot weather.

Growth Monitoring:

Due to regional variation, use the Wombaroo Koala Growth Chart to track expected weight and development for northern vs. southern animals.
Weigh joeys regularly to guide milk volumes and prevent overfeeding, which may lead to diarrhoea.

Weaning Process:

  • Introduce fresh eucalypt leaves from 6 months (180 days).

  • From 10 months (300 days), if joeys are eating well and gaining weight, gradually reduce milk intake.

  • By 12 months, aim for complete weaning with a daily intake of leaf equal to 10% of body weight.
