Animalintex Poultice Pad for Horses & Dogs
Ready-to-use antiseptic poultice pad for horses and dogs. Use hot for abscesses and infected wounds or cold for strains, sprains and swelling.
A hoof abscess can render an otherwise healthy horse three-legged lame overnight. Wounds, swelling and soft tissue injuries are a regular part of managing horses in work. Having a reliable, ready-to-use poultice pad in the first aid kit means you can respond promptly and effectively without needing to mix or prepare anything under pressure. Animalintex is one of the most widely trusted poultice products in equine veterinary care, a 3M product that has been a stable room staple for decades due to its simplicity, versatility and genuine clinical effectiveness.
What Animalintex Is and How It Works
Animalintex is a self-contained poultice pad made from 100% cotton wool with a non-woven cover on one side and a plastic occlusive backing on the other. Impregnated into the cotton are two active agents: boric acid, a mild antiseptic that cleanses wounds and helps control bacterial contamination, and tragacanth, a natural gum derived from plant sources that acts as the poulticing agent, drawing out fluid, pus and infection from beneath the skin surface.
The plastic backing serves a dual purpose. When the pad is applied wet, the backing retains moisture and warmth against the treated area, which is what makes the poultice effective for drawing. When used as a dry dressing, the backing acts as a barrier against external contamination, keeping the wound environment clean.
Animalintex can be used in three ways depending on what you are treating:
- Hot wet poultice: Soak the pad in hot water, squeeze out excess, and apply with the plastic backing facing away from the animal. Use for hoof abscesses, boils, infected or dirty wounds, cracked heels, laminitis, seedy toe, corns and thorns. The warmth and drawing action of tragacanth brings abscesses to a head and encourages infected material to the surface.
- Cold wet poultice: Soak in cool water and apply the same way. Use for strains, sprains, sore shins, splints, bruises, capped hocks and elbows. The cool application reduces heat and swelling in soft tissue injuries.
- Dry dressing: Apply the pad dry over a clean wound with the plastic backing away from the animal. Use as an absorbent, protective covering over open wounds where a moist environment or drawing action is not required.
Suitable for Horses and Dogs
Animalintex is indicated for use on both horses and dogs, though it is not recommended for use on cats. For horses it is most frequently used for hoof abscesses, lower limb soft tissue injuries and wound management. For dogs it can be used for wound care, minor skin infections and localised swelling. The pad can be cut to any size required, making it adaptable to different body areas and animal sizes.
- Animalintex Poultice Pad - Full-size pad that can be cut to the required shape and size. Suitable for hoof application, lower limb wrapping and wound dressing across a range of sizes.

FAQs About Animalintex Poultice
What is Animalintex used for in horses?
Animalintex is used for a wide range of conditions in horses. As a hot poultice it is most commonly used for hoof abscesses, where the warmth and drawing action encourages the abscess to come to a head and burst, providing relief often within 24 to 72 hours. It is also used for boils, infected wounds, cracked heels, seedy toe, corns, laminitis and thorns embedded in tissue. As a cold poultice it addresses soft tissue injuries including strains, sprains, bruised shins, splints, capped hocks and general swelling. It can also be used dry as a clean, absorbent wound dressing.
How do I apply Animalintex for a hoof abscess?
Place the pad in a shallow container with the plastic backing facing up. Pour hot water around the edges of the pad and allow it to soak for a minute or two until saturated. Gently squeeze out excess water so the pad is wet but not dripping. Position the pad against the sole of the hoof with the plastic backing facing away from the hoof. Secure it in place with a bandage wrap, duct tape or a hoof boot. Change the poultice daily until the abscess bursts or the lameness resolves. If the horse remains severely lame beyond 48 to 72 hours without resolution, call your vet as some abscesses require veterinary drainage.
Can I use Animalintex as a cold poultice for leg swelling?
Yes. For soft tissue injuries involving heat, swelling, strains and bruising, use cool or cold water rather than hot when soaking the pad. Apply the wet pad to the affected area with the plastic backing away from the skin and bandage securely. The cool, moist environment reduces inflammation and provides cushioning to sore tissue. Change the pad every 12 to 24 hours or when it has dried out.
Is Animalintex safe for dogs?
Yes. Animalintex is indicated for use on horses and dogs. It is not recommended for use on cats. For dogs it can be applied to wounds, minor skin infections, abscesses and localised swelling using the same hot or cold application method as for horses. Cut the pad to an appropriate size for the body area being treated and secure with a bandage.
How long should I leave a poultice on?
A poultice should typically be changed every 24 hours for active conditions like hoof abscesses. For soft tissue injuries being managed with cold poulticing, changing every 12 to 24 hours is appropriate depending on how quickly the pad dries. Never leave a wet poultice in place for more than 24 hours without changing, as prolonged contact with constantly wet skin can cause maceration of the tissue. Once an abscess has burst or a wound is clearly improving, you can transition to a dry dressing or simple bandage.
Can Animalintex be cut to size?
Yes. The full-size Animalintex Poultice Pad can be cut to any shape or size required. This makes it adaptable for use on hoof soles, lower limbs, wounds on different body areas and smaller animals. Cut edges do not compromise the effectiveness of the remaining pad material.
