Advocate

Advocate Spot-On Flea, Heartworm & Worm Treatment

Monthly spot-on treatment for dogs and cats covering fleas, heartworm and intestinal worms in one easy application. For kittens from 9 weeks and puppies from 7 weeks.

Managing your pet's parasite prevention is straightforward in theory but easy to let slip in practice, especially when different products cover different parasites and require different schedules. Advocate simplifies things considerably. A single monthly spot-on application covers fleas, heartworm and a broad range of intestinal worms in both cats and dogs, removing the need to juggle multiple products for core parasite protection. At The Vet Shed we stock the full Advocate range across all weight categories for both species.

What Advocate Treats

Advocate contains two active ingredients working together. Imidacloprid kills fleas on contact through disruption of their nervous system, meaning fleas do not need to bite your pet to be killed. Moxidectin is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream where it provides ongoing protection against heartworm and intestinal worms including roundworm, hookworm and whipworm in dogs, and roundworm and hookworm in cats.

Heartworm is a serious and potentially fatal condition transmitted by mosquitoes, and consistent monthly prevention is the only reliable way to protect against it. Advocate makes this easy by combining heartworm prevention with flea and worm control in one product, reducing the chance of gaps in coverage that can occur when multiple products are managed separately.

Advocate Products at The Vet Shed

Advocate is colour coded by species and weight. Always use the product that matches your pet's current weight and species. Never use a dog formulation on a cat.

What Advocate Does Not Cover

Advocate does not provide protection against ticks. If you are in a paralysis tick area or your dog is at risk from brown dog ticks, you will need a separate tick control product used alongside Advocate. Advocate also does not cover tapeworm, so if tapeworm is a concern for your pet, an additional treatment for that specific parasite may be needed. Speak to your vet about the most appropriate combination for your pet's lifestyle and location.

FAQs About Advocate

What parasites does Advocate treat?

Advocate treats fleas, heartworm, roundworm and hookworm in both cats and dogs. In dogs it also covers whipworm and ear mites. It kills fleas on contact without requiring them to bite your pet. The moxidectin component is absorbed into the bloodstream and provides ongoing internal parasite protection for a full month after each application.

Does Advocate protect against ticks?

No. Advocate does not provide tick protection. If your dog is in a paralysis tick zone or at risk from other tick species, you will need to use a dedicated tick treatment alongside Advocate. The Vet Shed stocks a range of tick prevention options including Advantix for dogs that can be used to fill this gap.

Does Advocate cover tapeworm?

No. Advocate does not treat tapeworm. If your pet is at risk of tapeworm, typically through hunting, eating raw meat or having fleas, a separate tapeworm treatment will be needed. Your vet can advise on the best approach for your pet's specific circumstances and lifestyle.

How do I apply Advocate correctly?

Part the fur at the back of the neck to expose the skin. Apply the entire contents of the pipette directly onto the skin at the base of the skull. For dogs over 25kg the contents should be applied across three spots along the back rather than a single point. Avoid contact with eyes. Wash hands after application. Keep pets apart until the treated area is dry and avoid bathing for 48 hours after application.

Can Advocate be used on kittens and puppies?

Yes. The orange Advocate for kittens and small cats is suitable from 9 weeks of age. The
