Taking care of fleas and ticks is an essential part of pet care.   Fleas cause nasty irritations, make the pet extremely uncomfortable and in extreme cases can cause anaemia and death.  Fleas breed fast so one flea turns into thousands very quickly.   Using a good flea protection regularly will prevent this from happening.  
Ticks are deadly.  There are many types of ticks but the most concerning is the Paralyis tick which is very common.    1 tick can kill the largest of dogs. They are small and usually the only time when you will realise your dog has one is when the poison has set in and the pet is showing signs of paralyis.   Once this starts your pet will need emergency vet treatment which is not always successful and is very expensive.    Use a good quality tick control product and your pet will be safe as these products work.
