How to Prepare
To make 1 litre of milk:
Mix 200g of powder with 850mL of warm (pre-boiled) water.
- Add half the water to the powder and stir to form a smooth paste.
- Add remaining water and mix thoroughly.
- Avoid overheating to prevent curdling; if water is too cold, the powder may not dissolve properly.
- Use an electric whisk for larger volumes.
Refrigerate prepared milk for up to 24 hours or freeze in small portions for up to 2 weeks.
Feeding Guide
Bottle Feeding (Young or Individual Lambs)
-
Warm milk to 35°C
-
Use a lamb bottle with a lamb-specific teat (Wombaroo D Teat for smaller lambs)
-
Feed every 4 hours for the first 4 days, then:
-
Every 6 hours by week 1
-
Every 8 hours by week 2
-
-
Offer pre-boiled water between feeds in hot weather to prevent dehydration.
-
Ensure clean drinking water is always available.
Self-Feeding (Groups or Older Lambs)
- Use a bucket fitted with rubber teats at least 40cm above ground level
- Offer milk cold (5°C) to reduce overfeeding and spoilage
- Typical intake: 0.8–1.1 litres of milk per lamb per day, based on body weight
Growth Monitoring
- Birth weight: 4–6kg depending on breed
- Expected daily weight gain: 250–400g
- Weigh lambs regularly to track progress
- Avoid overfeeding to reduce the risk of digestive upset or diarrhoea
Weaning
- Hand-reared lambs can be weaned from 15–20 days old if they weigh at least 9kg
- Begin offering milk-soaked pellets and digestible hay from 7–10 days old
- Gradually reduce milk volume as solid food intake increases
- Transition to solid feed completely once sufficient intake is established
