Wombaroo Possum Milk Replacer >0.8 – For Late-Stage Possum & Glider Joeys
Wombaroo Possum Milk Replacer >0.8 is a high-energy, nutrient-rich milk substitute designed for possum and glider joeys that have completed more than 80% of their pouch life. This includes joeys with short to dense fur, fully opened eyes, and erect ears that are starting to explore outside the pouch and consume some solid food. Faeces at this stage typically appear as soft to firm dark pellets.
Key Benefits
-
Formulated for Late Lactation: Matches the nutritional profile of natural late-stage possum milk.
-
High Energy Content: Elevated fat levels support the increased activity of older, emerging joeys.
-
Peak Growth Support: Rich in protein to meet the rapid growth demands of this development stage.
-
Veterinarian Approved:
“We have used and recommended the Wombaroo Possum Milk Replacers for Brushtails, Squirrels and Sugar Gliders in Townsville extensively. Handling, mentoring, and supervising about 250–300 animals a year. We would recommend the milks to all the members of the care group that we trained.”
– Eleanor & Jim Pollock (BVSc OAM)

Directions – Making Up Milk
To prepare:
- 100mL: Mix 25g powder (approx. 3½ scoops) with 80mL warm pre-boiled water
- 1L: Mix 250g powder with 800mL warm pre-boiled water
Preparation Tips:
- Add half the water to the powder and stir into a smooth paste
- Add remaining water and mix thoroughly
- Use an electric whisk for larger volumes – essential for mixing due to high fat content
Storage:
- Refrigerate for 24 hours
- Freeze for up to 2 weeks in small portions (e.g. ice cube trays)
- Re-mix thoroughly after thawing
- Discard any unused thawed milk and always wash feeding equipment well
Feeding Guide
- Warm milk to approx. 30°C
- Use a bottle and teat (SD or LD Teat for larger joeys; C or P Teat for smaller species)
- Syringe or dropper may be needed for pygmy possums or small gliders
Feeding Frequency:
- Feed 4 times daily during early emergence (Age Factor >0.8)
- Reduce to twice daily once joey is consistently consuming solid food
- Eventually offer one night-time feed alongside solid foods
- Ensure fresh water and natural browse are always available
If dehydration is suspected, especially in warm weather, provide additional water between feeds.
Growth Monitoring
- Monitor weight regularly using species-specific Wombaroo growth charts
- Use weight data to determine milk volumes and adjust feeding schedule
- Avoid overfeeding – excess milk can cause diarrhoea
Weaning Guidelines
Weaning typically begins at 1.3 times the pouch life of the species. For example, a Common Brushtail (pouch life ~150 days) can be weaned at ~200 days.
As milk intake decreases, offer a diet that reflects the natural adult diet of the species:
- High Protein Supplement for joeys fed fruit and vegetables
- Small Carnivore Food for insectivorous species
- Lorikeet & Honeyeater Food for nectar feeders
Transitioning from milk should be gradual, ensuring solid nutrition is maintained.
