Wombaroo Possum Milk Replacer <0.8 – For Early-Stage Possum & Glider Joeys

Wombaroo Possum Milk Replacer <0.8 is a specialised milk formula designed for possums and gliders that have completed less than 80% of their pouch life. Ideal for pinkies and joeys with fine fur, this formula supports the critical early developmental stages when joeys are fully pouch-bound, eyes closed or just opening, and entirely dependent on milk.

Key Benefits

  • Tailored for Early Development: Mimics the nutritional profile of early-to-mid lactation possum and glider milk.

  • Balanced Nutrition: Moderate energy content with balanced carbohydrate and protein, and relatively low fat to match natural intake.

  • Supports Hair Growth: High in sulphur-containing amino acids (cysteine & methionine) to promote strong, healthy fur development.

  • Veterinarian Recommended: Backed by experienced wildlife vets and carers, including Eleanor & Jim Pollock BVSc OAM.

"We have used and recommended the Wombaroo Possum Milk Replacers extensively for over 250–300 animals annually. We recommend them to all carers we train." – Eleanor & Jim Pollock, Townsville

When to Use

Use Possum Milk Replacer <0.8 for:

  • Pink, furless joeys

  • Joeys with fine fur and eyes closed or just opening

  • Fully pouch-bound and entirely milk-dependent animals

Not suitable for older joeys. Transition to Wombaroo Possum Milk Replacer >0.8 once joeys are fully furred and beginning to emerge from the pouch.

Directions – Making Up Milk

To make 100mL: Mix 16g of powder (2½ scoops) with 90mL of warm pre-boiled water
To make 1L: Mix 160g of powder with 900mL of warm pre-boiled water

Mixing Tip:

  1. Add half the water to the powder and stir into a paste.

  2. Add remaining water and mix thoroughly.

  3. Use an electric whisk for larger volumes to ensure proper blending – this helps dissolve the high protein and fat content.

Storage:

  • Refrigerate for up to 24 hours

  • Freeze for up to 2 weeks in small portions (e.g. ice cube trays)

  • Discard any thawed, unused milk and wash all feeding utensils thoroughly

Feeding Guide

  • Warm milk to around 30°C

  • Feed with a bottle and teat:

    • Use a C Teat, P Teat, or SD Teat for possums and gliders

    • For tiny species like pygmy possums or ringtails, use a syringe or dropper

  • Feed 6–8 times daily for furless joeys, reducing to 4 feeds per day as pouch emergence begins

  • Provide extra water between feeds during hot weather to prevent dehydration

  • Always consult a wildlife vet or experienced carer for joey care advice

Growth Monitoring

  • Use Wombaroo growth charts to track development based on species

  • Weigh joeys regularly to ensure proper weight gain

  • Avoid overfeeding to prevent diarrhoea – follow the suggested feed volumes provided in feeding tables

Transitioning to Possum >0.8 Formula

As joeys become fully furred and begin pouch emergence, gradually transition them to Possum Milk Replacer >0.8:

  • Transition over 8–18 days, depending on species

  • Slowly replace <0.8 formula with >0.8 using a mixing ratio that changes daily

  • Refer to the Wombaroo growth charts for species-specific transition plans

Important: Transition by age, not weight – underweight joeys still need appropriate milk for their developmental stage.

Note for Carers

Caring for furless possums and gliders is highly specialised. Due to their fragility, this care should only be undertaken by experienced wildlife rehabilitators with adequate support and resources.
