Diabetes mellitus is a condition where the body's ability to produce or use insulin is reduced. Insulin works to move glucose from food into the cells of the body to provide energy. Without adequate insulin action, glucose remains in the bloodstream at elevated levels rather than being used by the cells.

Feeding Instructions

Amounts shown in the table below are based on your dog's target body weight. Royal Canin Diabetic is recommended for all newly diagnosed cases of diabetes mellitus until control of clinical signs has been achieved. After that, nutritional management should be guided by body condition score (BCS):

• BCS 6 or less: continue with Royal Canin Diabetic
• BCS 7 to 9: transition to Royal Canin Satiety Weight Management

Important: The use of this food may affect your dog's sensitivity to insulin. It is strongly recommended that blood glucose and insulin response are monitored when starting or changing the diet so that insulin dosage can be adjusted by your veterinarian accordingly.
