Advantix

Advantix Flea, Tick & Insect Protection for Dogs

Fortnightly spot-on for dogs that kills and repels fleas, paralysis ticks, mosquitoes, sandflies, stable flies and lice. Water resistant and fast acting.

For dog owners in Australia, paralysis ticks are not a theoretical risk. They are a genuine, seasonal danger that can kill an otherwise healthy dog quickly if not caught early. Finding a product that not only kills ticks but repels them before they attach is an important step up from basic tick control, and that is exactly what Advantix delivers. A fortnightly spot-on treatment that kills and repels fleas, ticks including the paralysis tick, mosquitoes, sandflies, stable flies and lice, Advantix gives dogs broad-spectrum protection in a single easy application.

How Advantix Works

Advantix combines two active ingredients that work together to target pests in different ways. Imidacloprid disrupts the nervous system of fleas, killing them within minutes of contact. Permethrin acts as both a contact insecticide and a repellent, targeting ticks, mosquitoes, sandflies and stable flies. The combination means pests do not need to bite your dog to be affected. Fleas and ticks are killed on contact before they can feed, which matters particularly for paralysis ticks where even a brief attachment can begin the process of envenomation.

After application to the skin between the shoulder blades, the formula spreads across the body through the skin's natural oils, providing whole-body coverage. The product is water resistant, remaining effective even after swimming or bathing.

Advantix is colour coded by dog weight. Always select the product that matches your dog's current weight.

Important: Advantix is for Dogs Only

Advantix must never be used on cats. The permethrin in Advantix is highly toxic to cats due to their inability to metabolise certain compounds, and exposure can be fatal. If you have both dogs and cats in your household, keep your cat separated from your treated dog for at least 48 hours after application and until the application site is fully dry. After this period normal interaction can resume safely.

FAQs About Advantix

How often do I need to apply Advantix?

For paralysis tick control, Advantix should be applied every two weeks. For flea control and protection against mosquitoes, sandflies and other insects, monthly application is sufficient. In paralysis tick areas or during peak tick season, maintaining the fortnightly schedule is strongly recommended. Set a reminder so you never miss a treatment window.

What pests does Advantix protect against?

Advantix kills and repels fleas, ticks including the paralysis tick, mosquitoes, sandflies, stable flies and lice. It kills fleas and ticks on contact without requiring them to bite your dog first. It also repels ticks and flying insects, reducing the chance of attachment and feeding before the insecticide takes effect.

What is the difference between Advantix and Advantage?

Advantage contains imidacloprid only and is specifically a flea treatment. It is also suitable for cats, rabbits and ferrets. Advantix combines imidacloprid with permethrin, which adds tick repellency and kill as well as protection against mosquitoes, sandflies and stable flies. Advantix is for dogs only and must never be used on cats. If you need flea-only treatment for a cat or a multi-species household, Advantage is the appropriate choice for your cat.

Is Advantix safe to use on puppies?

Yes. The green Advantix for small dogs and puppies can be used on dogs from seven weeks of age. Always use the correct weight-appropriate product and follow the label instructions for application.

Is Advantix water resistant?

Yes. Advantix is water resistant and remains effective after swimming or bathing. For best results, apply when your dog is dry and avoid bathing for at least 48 hours after application to allow the product to fully distribute across the skin. If bathing is needed between treatments, use a soap-free dog shampoo and apply the next treatment once your dog is dry.

Can I use Advantix if I also have a cat at home?

You can use Advantix on your dog if you have cats in the house, but you need to keep them separated for at least 48 hours after application and until the treated area on your dog is completely dry. Permethrin is highly toxic to cats and direct contact with a freshly treated dog can be dangerous. Once the product has dried and the 48-hour period has passed, normal contact between your dog and cat can safely resume.

Why am I still seeing fleas on my dog after applying Advantix?

Seeing fleas after treatment usually means there is an ongoing infestation in your home environment rather than a failure of the product. Adult fleas living in carpets, bedding and furniture continue to emerge and jump onto your dog after treatment. Advantix will kill these fleas on contact once they land on your dog, but it does not repel fleas. With consistent monthly use, each new generation of fleas is killed before it can breed and the environmental infestation gradually reduces. Treating your home environment alongside your pet speeds up this process significantly.

Can I use Advantix alongside my dog's other medications?

Consult your vet before using Advantix alongside other medications your dog is taking. While Advantix is generally well tolerated, your vet is best placed to assess whether any interactions are relevant for your individual dog's health situation and treatment plan.
