Horse Girths & Surcingles – Secure Saddle Fit & Training Versatility
Girths and surcingles play a vital role in keeping your tack securely in place while ensuring your horse stays comfortable and unrestricted. Whether you're riding, lunging, or training from the ground, the right girth or surcingle supports safe movement and prevents pinching or slipping under the saddle.
At The Vet Shed, we stock a variety of English girths, Western cinches, training surcingles, and anti-gall designs to suit all horses, ponies, and disciplines. Choose from breathable neoprene, soft padded fabric, or classic leather in sizes to fit ponies through to warmbloods. Brands include Equi-Prene, Ord River, STC, Jeremy & Lord, and more.
Types of Girths & Surcingles Available
- Dressage Girths – Short girths for monoflap saddles, offering close contact

What to Look For When Choosing a Girth or Surcingle
- Match girth style to your saddle – dressage, jumping, all-purpose or Western
- Choose breathable, padded materials to avoid irritation or sweating
- Elastic ends offer better flexibility and easier adjustment
- Surcingles should sit just behind the withers and include multiple rings for training tools
- Always ensure a snug, even fit without pinching behind the elbows

FAQs About Horse Girths & Surcingles
What size girth does my horse need?
Measure from one billet strap to the other, across the girth groove. Most horses use girths between 105cm and 145cm depending on saddle and build.
Can I use the same girth for multiple saddles?
Only if the saddles are the same type (e.g. two jump saddles). Dressage saddles require short girths, while jump/GP saddles need longer ones.
How tight should a girth be?
A girth should be snug but not overly tight. You should be able to fit a couple of fingers between the girth and the horse’s side when fully tightened.
What’s the purpose of a training surcingle?
Surcingles are used for groundwork and lunging. They offer attachment points for side reins, draw reins or lunging systems to help develop topline and balance.
Are anti-gall girths worth it?
Yes – they’re ideal for sensitive horses or those prone to rubbing. Look for soft neoprene or fleece-lined designs for added comfort and protection.
