Horse Bits – Improve Communication, Comfort & Responsiveness

The bit is one of the most important tools in your horse’s tack setup. It plays a direct role in communication between horse and rider, and selecting the right one can dramatically impact comfort, responsiveness, and training outcomes. Whether you're working with a young horse, a seasoned competitor, or one with a sensitive mouth, choosing the correct bit matters.

At The Vet Shed, we stock a range of English and Western bits suited to all experience levels, riding styles, and horse conformations. Our collection includes loose ring snaffles, eggbutts, French links, gags, curb bits, hackamores and more – with options for mild or more refined control. You’ll also find training bits and gentle options for horses with sensitive mouths or previous injuries.

Common Types of Horse Bits

  • Snaffle Bits – Gentle direct pressure, ideal for basic riding and young horses
  • French Link & Lozenge Bits – Reduce nutcracker action for greater comfort
  • Eggbutt & D-Ring Bits – Stable in the mouth with minimal pinching
  • Gag Bits & Curb Bits – For experienced hands needing refined control
  • Hackamores & Bitless Options – Great for horses with mouth issues or alternative training

How to Choose the Right Bit

  • Start with a simple snaffle if your horse is green or recently retrained
  • Consider your discipline – some bits are discipline-specific (e.g. curb bits in Western, gags in show jumping)
  • Check your horse’s mouth shape, tongue thickness, and palate height for comfort
  • Try different mouthpieces – double-jointed or lozenge styles often offer better comfort and responsiveness
  • When in doubt, opt for the mildest bit that provides the control you need

We stock horse bits from trusted brands like Jeremy & Lord, STC, Fort Worth and others, with sizing options for ponies, cobs, full-sized horses and warmbloods. Not sure where to start? Our experienced team can guide you to the best bit for your horse’s training stage and riding goals.

FAQs About Horse Bits

What size bit does my horse need?

Use a bit gauge or measure an existing bit. It should sit evenly across the mouth with 3–5mm clearance on either side. Sizes vary between ponies, cobs, and full-sized horses.

Is a snaffle bit harsh?

No – snaffles are generally the mildest type of bit. They apply direct pressure without leverage and are widely used in all disciplines and levels.

What’s the difference between single-jointed and double-jointed bits?

Single-jointed bits can create a “nutcracker” effect, while double-jointed bits with a lozenge or French link reduce pressure on the roof of the mouth and tongue.

Should I use a gag or curb bit?

Only experienced riders should use bits with leverage action like gags or curbs. They are designed for advanced control and specific disciplines.

Can I ride bitless instead?

Yes – many horses do well in bitless bridles or hackamores. These apply pressure to the nose, jaw, or poll instead of the mouth. Transition gradually and test responsiveness.
