How to Choose the Right Rug

  • Measure first: chest centre to rump point; check drop so the belly and hindquarters are covered without overhang
  • Fabric & Denier: higher denier (e.g. 1200D/1680D) for playful paddock mates; lighter fabrics for gentle use
  • Fill Weight: no-fill or 50 g for mild rain, ~100–200 g for cool days, 300 g+ for cold snaps
  • Fit details: seek wither relief, shoulder gussets and adjustable chest closures to reduce rubbing
  • Neck style: choose combo or detachable necks if your horse is clipped or in exposed paddocks

Care Tips

  • Brush off mud, then wash with rug-safe detergent; avoid fabric softeners
  • Air-dry out of direct heat; reproof waterproof rugs as needed
  • Store clean and dry; fasten straps to protect hardware and linings

Rugs FAQs

What denier do I need for a turnout rug?

For everyday paddock wear, 1200D or higher offers excellent toughness. Quiet horses or stable rugs can use lighter fabrics.

Combo or detachable neck — which is better?

Combos provide seamless coverage in wild weather. Detachable necks let you adapt quickly to temperature changes.

How should a rug fit at the shoulders and wither?

There should be room to move without pressure on the wither. Adjust chest clips evenly and check for smooth shoulder movement.

When should I reproof my rug?

When water stops beading or after several washes. Clean the rug, then apply a suitable reproofer and allow to cure fully.

Can my horse wear a rug in humid weather?

Yes, choose breathable linings or mesh/fly rugs and avoid unnecessary fill so heat can escape.
