How To Use Aquarium Salt
Author: Kate Date Posted:4 August 2023
Aquarium Salt promotes fish health by improving gill function, making it easier for fish to breathe and provides essential electrolytes that fish need to reach peak coloration and vitality.
It is also one of the most effective multipurpose aquarium medications available. It’s effective against bacteria, fungus, and external parasites. (Just remember salt is not to be used with most live plants and snails). It works by dehydrating the bacteria, fungus or parasite (by drawing the water out of their cells through osmosis) who dehydrate much fast than their hosts (your fish).
(loose aquarium salt)
Dose rates and Instructions
1 Tbsp Salt per 18.9 litres of Water – VERY LOW DOSE (MAINTENANCE DOSE)
Add 1 tablespoon (Tbsp) of salt per 11.35 litres of water.
It is easier to dissolve the salt in a cup of water and then add the saline water to the aquarium. This dose is very low and intendedfor maintenence. Just remember to add more salt when you do a water change.
1 Tbsp Salt per 11.35 litres of Water – LOW DOSE
(Safe for most fish except for Anchor Catfish)
Add 1 Tbsp Salt per 11.35 litres of water
This dose rate is on the low end too and it’s used to fight mild cases of bacterial and fungal infection. It also gently irritates the fish’s slime coat, causing the fish to produce more beneficial mucus that can block some parasites and microorganisms.
Keep the fish in the salt solution approx 5 days, and then increase the concentration if there’s no improvement.
1 Tbsp Salt per 7.5 litres of Water – MED/HIGH DOSE
Add 1 Tbsp of salt per 7.5 litres of water for the next level of treatment.
At this dose, the treatment is able to cure a wider range of illnesses. You can use this dose rate to treat ich (also known as white spot disease) for a period of 10 days.
