Advantix flea treatment for dogs

Advantix is made by Bayer Animal Health.  A trusted company for making animal products, including flea treatments for dogs.

Advantix is a topical ectoparasiticide that is used to protect dogs against ticks, fleas, mosquitoes and other parasites. More specifically in Australia, it is used in the treatment and prevention of the paralysis tick, the brown dog tick and the bush tick, which can be life threatening to dogs. Advantix should be applied to your dog every 4 weeks for flea control. If you are wanting to use it for paralysis tick control then you will need to apply it every 2 weeks. It is effective against paralysis ticks for 2 week, and safe to use every alternating 2 weeks on your dog.

Advantix not only kills but it also repels: it stops ticks, mosquitoes, sand flies and stable flies before they can bite or attach to your dog. It also kills fleas, ticks and lice quickly, as they come into contact with your dog’s skin or fur, with no need for the parasite to bite. Preventing bites reduces the risk of disease transmission from insects and also stops your dog from having an itchy or irritating painful bites.

Advantix is easy to administer, simply:

  • Part your dog’s hair until the skin is visible.

  • Squeeze the pipette either onto the back of the neck or evenly onto four spots along the skin of your dog’s back, from the shoulders to the base of the tail.

Advantix is safe to use on pups from 7 weeks of age and over 1.5kg in body weight.   It can safely be used in bitches during pregnancy and lactation. It is not recommended that you apply it to wet dogs, as it may reduce the effectiveness of Advantix

Advantix®’s active ingredients deliver synergistic action

Advantix uses 2 active ingredients, Imadocloprid and Permethrin.  The combination of these 2 actives working together creates synergistic efficacy that fights against fleas and ticks.

  • Imidacloprid is a neo-nicotinoid insecticide which binds to nicotinergic receptors on post-synaptic neurons and increases the excitability and the frequency of the spikes produced.. This leads first to activation, then to blocking of the post-synaptic receptor, followed by hyperexcitability of the insect’s nervous system and finally death of the insect.
  • Permethrin is a third generation synthetic pyrethoid and is widely used in both human and veterinary medicine for the control of fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and lice. It delays or prevents the inactivation of the sodium channels in insect nerves. Permethrin is one of the few ectoparasiticides that possess both killing (acaricidal and insecticidal) and repellent properties.

In combination, imidacloprid and permethrin overwhelm the nervous system of the parasite, resulting in neurotoxic activity beyond results of the compounds alone, a more profound and quicker paralysis, and death of the arthropods. Repellency means interfering with the capabilities of the ectoparasite to attach and feed. Inhibition of feeding is important, not only because it eliminates irritation associated with biting, but also because it reduces the risk of transmission of canine vector-borne diseases.

Advantix® must not be used on cats

  • Permethrin cannot be metabolised by cats and is therefore toxic for cats.
  • Permethrin use in cats can have severe or even lethal consequences.
  • If your cat is effected please seek Veterinary treatment immediantly
